Storie di fari
Il pic nic era riuscito benissimo. I ragazzi lo avevano organizzato solo il pomeriggio del giorno precendente per festeggiare l’ultimo giorno di vacanza prima della partenza di ognuno per i vari corsi universitari.
In mezzo alla radura, circondata da un bosco, era ancora stesa la grande tovaglia ricoperta di piatti, bottiglie e avanzi, avrebbero rimesso a posto prima di tornare verso casa. Intanto i ragazzi si erano sparsi qua e là : chi giocava a palla, chi schiacciava un pisolino, qualcuno era sceso al mare a pescare.
John Carpenter, seduto all’ombra di un’albero si voltò a guardare Carol che, sdraiata vicino a lui su un plaid, dormiva placidamente. John la guardò a lungo, si frequentavano solo da tre mesi, ma lui l’amava molto e sperava un giorno di poterla sposare. Adorava i suoi capelli biondi e quegli occhi azzurri che tradivano la dolcezza del suo carattere. Sospirò. Doveva passare ancora tanto tempo ! Lo aspettava l’Università, suo padre era un ingegnere e voleva che lui seguisse la sua strada e lo vedeva già intento a progettare e costruire ponti e grattacieli, ma questi non erano i progetti di John, i suoi erano ben più modesti, anche se altrettanto impegnativi. Lui sognava di entrare nella Guardia Costiera e diventare Guardiano di un Faro.
